Practice Groups

Practice groups are organized according to age. All swimmers must be able to complete one length of the pool (25 yards) of both freestyle and backstroke to be on the team.

·         Pre-Team – 6+ – Introduction to competitive swim team. For athletes not yet ready for the full rigors of competitive practices but are interested in seeing what swimming is all about. The focus of the group is stroke technique and development.

·         Colt - 6-8 – Group focus is stroke technique, stroke development, learning starts and turns, competitive meet procedures and having fun with swimming.

·         Pony - 9-10 – Continued stroke development and progression are the underlying foci of the Pony group. Training sets are introduced to challenge and increase the fitness of the athletes.

·         Mustang - 11-12 – The Mustangs have a technical and progressive training focus.

·         Senior Groups – 13 & Over – The Seniors are broken into 4 different groups to address the varied levels of the athletes.

o    Fitness – Open to High School students only. This is a noncompetitive training group that has a reduced number of practice options available at a reduced fee. The group is for swimmers looking for fitness training without the competitive side of the sport. The group trains in the water with the Red and Black groups and no dryland.

o    Red – The Red group has a greater stroke development focus to teach the athletes improved skills to move to the next level. Dryland is incorporated into practices.

o    Black – The Black group has a technical focus with a rigorous training schedule. Athletes in this group must be able to complete a test set of 10x100 freestyle on 1:30 in order to meet the training requirements of the group. Dryland is also included in the training schedule.

o    National Team – This is the top level of Barrington Swim Club. All athletes must have winter Speedo Champions Series (Sectional) cuts and meet an attendance requirement of 80% to earn the right to wear National Team. Practices are rigorous with a technique focus and include dryland.

Swimmers will swim with the group that matches their age as of the Age Group Championship meet (State) at the end of each season.

All practices are at Barrington High School Natatorium unless otherwise noted on the calendar.
