Jack and the Magic Suit

Once upon a time there was a swimmer named Jack. He was a good swimmer with good parents, good coaches and a good team. He would go to meets and do quite well winning his events and easily improving his times. Jack came to practice nearly every day, unless he was tired or his friends were going to a movie or he did not feel well. While at practice he just got by doing what the coaches asked no more and no less. All was well in the Magic Kingdom of swimming. Then one day, when Jack was a bit older, he could no longer improve his times. He heard of a magic suit that would make him faster, he tried to join the magic team that had all the “right” stuff. He went to the magic coach that promised to help him get faster by working less. What do you think happened to Jack?

I think at this point I think everyone realizes what the point of the story is. There is no magic suit, no magic coach, no magic team, no magic period. There is only one way to improve in the sport of swimming good technique coupled with hard training all the time! So many swimmers try hard to have the “right things” they forget what real success is all about. Some swimmers even think that by changing to successful clubs they will be successful. The ONLY way anyone is going to be their best is to get better technique and train harder, faster, and more consistently then they have before. Do not buy into the mirage of magic swimming; do not go out spend money on “fast suits”, “fast coaches”, and “fast foods”. I never saw an Olympic gold medal given to a suit, or a coach, or a granola bar. These rewards are reserved for those who have dedicated themselves to excellence for long periods of time. In this story the only way Jack can live happily ever after is to forget the nonsense of fairy dust thinking and get to practice every day and be a champion there first by working hard and listening to his coaches.
