Here are some things the Team did well:
1. Supporting Your Teammates: It is great to see BSC swimmers on the side of the pool or at the end of the pool cheering for their teammates all the time without being asked or told to do so. One of the traits of a great team is that genuine caring and support for one another.
2. Determination: Another trait of great teams is determination, how do we perform when the situation is not perfect. BSC coming away with the Team Title despite the fact we could only muster 65% Best Times shows that eveyone on the team was racing against the competition every race no matter what. That is always good to see.
3. Technique Change and Improvement: It was very encouraging to see BSC Teammates sticking with the changes they are trying to make in their technique, which in the short term can be frustrating with slower times, but in the long term yield much better and long lasting progress.
Here are some things that the Team needs to keep working at:
1. Toughness--BSC Swimmers need to keep a positive mindset at all times. The mantra "Always be Happy, Never be Satisfied" is a good guide. Always find something good in a swim or situation that can make you better. There were too many times where BSC Teammates were giving up on a race or on the meet entirely becuase they did not go the time they wanted. All anyone can ever do in this sport is train as hard as you can as often as you can; then on race day swim as hard as you can using everything you have learned in training. No More No Less. Great Teams handle adversity with poise and use it as motivation to swim better each race.
2. Perspective--BSC Teammates need to put each race and each meet in proper perspective: what is my end of the season meet for the summer, how much work have I put in leading up to a swim, why do I expect to go a certain time, how should the pool and weather conditions alter my expectations. There were too many times this weekend where BSC Swimmers were upset they did not achieve a Regional or Championship Qualifying Time. Teammates with less than 80% and have attended only one meet the entire summer should have a lower expectation. Sometimes swimmers do not even think about making these goals until they were warming up for their races at the meet. ATTENTION BSC SWIMMERS AND PARENTS!!! Goals that involve time standards should be on a post it note on your fridge or bathroom mirror at the beginning of the season to have any expectation of success at the end of the season. Furthermore, a tougher cut--like Nationals or Olympic Trials, has to be laid out even further in advance. This cannot be a matter of life or death whether a BSC swimmer swims the qualifying time or not at one meet or another--especially considering many BSC Swimmers did not even have the Championship Cut before this season. Enjoy the improvement and success, focus on improvement and the cuts will come in their own time.
Lets Keep Up the Good Work!!
SWIM LIKE A CHAMPION AT YOUR CHAMPIONSHIP MEET!!
