Goal Setting!! Throw Off All That Holds You Back
Throw Off That Which Hinders You
I want to congratulate all BSC Teammates for a great week of practice. I have seen so many of you working hard on perfecting technique as well as training like MANIACS!! You all ought to be really proud---think about it--- when you can consistently go faster than your best time in practice you should be ready to ROCK at the meet. Occasionally something from the theological past hits me in the head and makes me stand up and take notice. This week I was reading/translating from the 1st century Greek New Testament and found this phrase, “let us throw off everything that hinders us, and that which so easily trips us, and let us run our race with endurance.” I want to break this down a little and bring up 3 Key Ingredients to Success.
First, HAVE A GOAL, your goal should be measurable and have a time to be completed. Example: My goal is to be a 2:00 in the 200Fly at Masters Nationals in 2013. To be in a race or to exhibit discipline you need to have an ending point, and your goals serve as those endpoints or checkpoints along the way.
Second, DO NOT BE DISTRACTED; do not let anyone tell you anything is impossible! There are times when circumstances will get in the way of your achieving your goal. There are so many ways to be distracted some of them are subtle some are not. When a friend or even teammate encourages you to not go to practice because it is, “too early” or “too hard” or “no one else will be there” what will you do? Sometimes Nintendo, other sports, school, or boredom can get in the way what will you do? My encouragement is throw them all off!!! Do not allow yourself to be tripped up or slowed down by anyone or anything!! YOU and YOU ALONE are in charge!! Whether it is managing your study time better or managing your social time better do not allow yourself to be knocked off track from what you want to achieve!!
Third, ACHIEVING YOUR GOAL IS A MARATHON HAVE PATIENCE, As I go through my re-entrance into swimming as an athlete I repeat this phrase to myself every day and sometimes every lap, to remind myself to do things properly and to the very best of my ability. You must do the same! There are sets that you may not like or not want to do, but it is part of your marathon to your goal!! Some swimmers train for 2-3 Years without a best time just training for the opportunity to swim fast at the Olympic Trials or Olympic Games. The same is true for BSC swimmers how long and how hard are you willing to train to achieve your DREAMS?
As we all get down to the half way point of the Short Course Season I want every BSC Teammate to be focused on what they need to do in the training pool to be AWESOME at the Monster Mash, Mustang Classic and the Nike Challenge Meet. These meets are a checkpoint leading to your AGE GROUP STATE and SECTIONAL goals use these opportunities to honestly evaluate where you are and to commit yourself to where you want to go. DON”T BE DISTRACTED THROW OF ALL THAT HOLDS YOU BACK!
