The Secret of a Good Kick

Here is a great video segment from USA Swimming illustrating good freestlye kick.

The ability to swim fast at the elite levels has become all about the ability to kick for the duration of a race--Regardless of the distance.  Case in point, Ous Mellouli 1500Free Gold Medalist, from Tunisia but trains at University of Southern California, showed a great active 6 beat kick for the entire race. If you watch any freestyle event from the 2008 games you will see that everyone in the final has this trait.

Here at Barrington Swim Club we are also focusing on developing good active kicks by stressing getting the legs up on the second half of our practice swims as well as doing our kick sets with this element in mind. EJOY!

Remember your foot is like a fins and should be relaxed. If you watch the video closely you can also see the ankle flexibilty demonstrated. Great Kickers usually have hyper-flexible kness and ankles.
