124 BSC Teammates stepped up on the blocks at home during the 18th Annual Winter Classic this weekend. The Team did a Great Job grabbing Second Place Overall behind perrenial state champion Saint Charles! Barrington Swim Club Swimmers finished with 80% Best Times, 12 New Team Records, 58 New Championship Cuts. All tolled BSC finished with 361 swims that were Regional Qualifying Times or Faster-- or nearly 50% of all swims! Kudos to temmates for a job well done. Special recognition to Emma Barnett, Maggie Emary, and Mekenna Scheitlin for New Sectional Cuts and Izzie Parenti for swimming a National Top 20 Time in the 1650Free for 11 year old girls. As we look forward to the West Chicago and St. Charles meets in two weeks we will really need to focus on stepping up and push hard to get our final Championship Cuts. Special Thanks to all the parents, siblings and officials that helped make the 18th Annual Winter Classic a great meet for BSC. Keep up the Good Work Team!

Here are a Couple Things You Did Well as a Team:

  1. Turns and Streamlining---There was a significant improvement in both turns and underwater work at this meet. This has been a focus point over the last month and it was great to see BSC swimmers pulling ahead on their underwater work and turns.

  2. Agressiveness---It was encouraging to see BSC swimmers swimming to the front early in the race. When Championship time rolls around this is a great way to get into a Final! BSC swimmers will have to be aggressive and win their heats to score points and make new qualifying times at Regionals and Championships. Going to the front of a race shows both Courage and Confidence!

  3. Acceleration on the Back Half of Swims---This item is a great compliment to #2. When BSC swimmers were aggressive going to the front early they showed their superior training and toughness by extending their lead and finishing what they started. Acceleration on the back half shows Discipline and Toughness!

  4. Great Racing Tactic—As a Coach you have to love when you see athletes approach every race with a plan---execute that plan---and be successful! BSC Teammates did a great job exectuing instructions and implimenting proper race tactics.

Here are a Couple Things We Need to Do Better:

  1. Attention to Details—Even though there was enormous improvement on Turns, and Breakouts, there were still far too many times where BSC Teamamtes lost a lead or missed a Qualifying standard on an undisciplined turn. Examples: breathing into or out of a turnor breathing into a finish, one handed touches, turning to close to the wall, floating into a turn. The BIG one though was NOT DOING A PULLOUT ON BREASTSTROKE! Yikes—I know everyone knows how to do one. There were far to many Dqs for no reason other than a lack of attention to detail in racing. Do it right all the time in practice---do it right all the time in races!

  2. In-Race Awareness—There were too many times where BSC teammates either missed an event of miscounted an event or were miscounted for. As a good swimmer you need to be aware of what you are doing at all times. This applies to waiting before an event as well as keeping track of your own lap count in a longer race. What will happen when you are at Nationals, and you are the only swimmer on your team, and you are swimming the 1500Meter Free? This all starts in practice! By knowing what the set is, what the interval is, when you are pushing off on the clock, what time you need to go on that set, and how hard you need to go to get that time. All these things directly translate into great racing!
