Dreams and Goal Setting
Goal Setting
Goals are Only Dreams With Deadlines
One of the most important aspects of goal setting is making sure that your goals are time sensitive. When Billy Bathwater says. “I want to go a 49.68 in the 100Free at Age Group State: I say good Job Billy you have a goal that is quantifiable and time sensitive. Billy ought to know the his training pace for Goal Time 100 is 12.42 for a 25,24.84 for a 50 and 37.26 for a 75. There are four questions that every swimmers needs to ask themselves when they are goal setting.
-
What do I want to Accomplish—In Billy's case it is going a 49.68 in the 100Free at Age Group Champs. Have a time and make it time sensitive
-
What do I need to do in Training—In Billy's case he knows he needs to be able to swim 12.4 for a 25, 24.42 for a 50, 37.26 for a 75 when training at Goal Time Pace
-
What am I willing to do to Accomplish my Goal. If Billy has a Goal, that Goal is Time Sensitive, and knows how he has to train to make that Goal, but is only willing to attend training 80% of the time it is very unlikely that he will achieve his goal.
-
What Can I Bring to the Team—Swimming is an Individual sport with Team implications. For a swimmer like Billy who is willing to work hard to make himself better he can do even more to help those around him to get better. He does this by setting a good example by following the previous 3 steps and helping his teammates do the same!
In short significant progress in swimming happens by making the Ultimate Commitment to the Ultimate Result.
