Great Job at the Waukesha Nike Classic

Great Job at the Waukesha Nike Classic

What an AWESOME meet! It was just a total joy to watch BSC swim so well with some of the best competition around. Barington Finished in the Top 5 combined standings and the Women's Team swimming to a 2nd Place Finish! There were 10 New Team Records at the Meet. 42 of 53 Teammates at the meet or 80% of the Team's swims were a Regional time or above. That is just amazing—Great Job.

Here are a Few Things You did Well:

  1. Acceleration at the end of races—One of the things I enjoy the most as a coach is seeing an athlete show explosive acceleration at the end of a race leaving the competition behind the last 10m of a race. There were so many great examples of BSC swimmers winning the finish of races this weekend doing just that. Keep working that aspect of our swims in practice to enhance that ability even more!

  2. Underwater Work---It was really amazing to see the continued progress of the Team with respect to underwater work on starts and turns. BSC swimmers are not just staying underwater, but using a better streamline with great kicking and pullouts to gain a significant advantage. There is still a ways to go until it is 100% perfect but it was noticeable that everyone is really trying to work on it and sticking with it. We will continue to make this a priority in warm up and stress it throughout practice.

Here are a Few Things We still need to Work On:

  1. Explosiveness on the breakout—As a Team we need to keep focusing on kicking hard while taking that first stroke. Too many times BSC swimmers had a great turn, great underwater then gave the lead back on the breakout stroke. Stay focused on accelerating as you surface. Breaststrokers that means using your kick on the underwater pullout to push yourself forward. I know we have been working on this, but we still have a long way to go.

  2. Know Your Goal---This weekend most BSC swimmers had a goal of one kind or another, but over half of those were not realistic. There were two examples of athletes who had Goal Time at the meet that was over 1.5 seconds per 50 faster than their Best Time and those Best Times were two weeks ago. It takes upwards of 6-8 Weeks of: tough, disciplined, 100% attendance, hard work in practice to make any kind of real and measurable improvement. Even after that there is no guarantee. If everything is done perfectly a realistic expectation of a mid-season to end of season improvement is about .5sec. Per 50. Of course the younger you are the easier it is to drop more time and the older you are the longer the length of work to get the same or less improvement.

Our next meet is in January at BHS—The Winter Classic. Keep working hard and stay focused on training your goals. Lets see some AWESOME IMPROVEMENT! GO BSC
