GOAL SETTING: HOW FAR AHEAD SHOULD AN ATHLETE LOOK? From USA Swimming 4/3/12 Effective goal setting entails setting long-term and short-term goals; these goals will identify where the athlete is going and how they are going to get there. When planning a vacation, you often think about dream destinations. Where would you go if you had unlimited funds and abilities… Egypt, the Caribbean, Europe? As with traveling and many other aspects of life it is fun to dream. In sport, it is also fun and important to dream. Dream goals...
The Perpetual Motivation Machine One of the traits that makes great athletes great is their ability to stay motivated. If you have read interviews with Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte or Natalie Coughlin you will immediately notice they are motivated by both their success and their failure. I think there are four things that BSC Teammates can learn from these Olympians to help stay Motivated and Enthusiastic for the Spring/Summer session and beyond. Be Motivated by Your Success—Success feeds Success. When someone does something great whether it is a little...
Mary T. is without question the most disciplined and dominant Butterfly swimmer in the pre-"super suit" era. She held both the 100 and 200m Fly records for nearly 20 years. Watch the explosiveness and consistent rythym and technique on the back half of the swim. BSC Teammates can learn alot from watching this swim, listening to their coaches, and working hard at having the same type of explosiveness on the back half!! 1 2007 World Championships Mens 100m Backstroke, Aaron Peirsol becomes the World champ again by smashing the...

At BSC we talk a lot about preparation and how that preparation leads to victory—or success. I want everyone to think about three links in the chain of preparation: preparing a goal, preparing to meet that goal, preparing to exceed that goal. First, is the link of preparing a goal. A goal time in swimming should be one that is challenging and time sensitive. If our friend Billy Bathwater goes a 34.24 in the 11-12 50meter free—right at a Regional time. A good goal would be to say, “I...

Welcome to Spring/Summer 2012 I hope everyone had a good break and is rested both physically and mentally. I hope everyone took a little time to set goals and is excited to train to make them. Welcome to all our new BSC Teammates we are really excited to have you on the squad and look forward to fun friends and fast swimming. Mekenna Scheitlin saved the best for last today at the NCSA Junior National meet in Orlando Florida. She swam the 50 free in the final swim of the meet for BSC and broke the team record swimming a 24.06. Anne Jacobsen set a new team mark in the 50back as well. What a great end to a really great year! Expect more, Do More, Achieve More in the next year!! The bar is set high, but I know BSC Teammates can rise to the challenge. Have a Great Break. See...
